While much of the country is reeling from blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, Graeagle has been enjoying a rather prolonged January thaw. If you are a fan of snow time, it can be a little frustrating. That is unless you live in California, where just about any climate condition you want is just a day trip away. In the case of Graeagle, it’s just a couple thousand feet of elevation away to find yourself in Winter Wonderland. Let’s jump in the car and head on up!
First stop: Northstar Ski Resort (about an hour drive from Graeagle)
Who can resist the urge to lace up a pair of ice skates and take a turn or two around the rink? Even if it’s been decades since you cut a figure eight, it all comes back very quickly in the family friendly, all skill level, beautifully groomed skating rink provided by Northstar. Even if you are more of the spectator type, the people watching, and the people with their exquisitely groomed dogs watching (yes you can bring the well behaved pooch) is unparalleled.
Northstar of course is known for its excellent skiing and snowboarding as well as a fun, fun, FUN! tubing hill for kids of all ages.
Amazing dining, casual and formal, round out the perfect day outing.
Bratwurst With A View: The Big Blue View Bar and Grill
The name says it all. Whether you’re solo or coupled up, the place to see and be seen. Located about an hour and a half drive from Graeagle, in Homewood, CA, this is a local list topper. There is no better vantage point to take in the spectacular glory of Big Blue/Lake Tahoe, than from a big blue Adirondack chair at this carved out of the hill destination. Add to that live dj music provided by the likes of Truckee Radio 101.5’s resident reggae host, DJ Treez, and a beer/bratwurst combo within arms reach…
Not to discount the excellent groomed trails at Homewood Mountain Ski Resort, if you need to work off that lunch, they are readily available.
